Laughing Nut

Laughing Nut was a one-week sprint project that prioritized ideation and exploration over formal design, with the goal of exploring the innovative potential of a random object by deconstructing it into its fundamental components and uncovering its existential core. The aim was to foster innovation through tactile, hands-on experimentation, moving beyond abstract brainstorming.

The random object selected was a pistachio—chosen without prior planning, simply because the project coincided with the Persian New Year. It is a seed famously known in Persian culture for its smile-like form and is always present in joyful gatherings.

Natural Supplement ?

Pistachio is one of the most nutrient-dense nuts, containing 20g of protein per 100g, along with high levels of potassium and vitamin B6. This remarkable concentration of nutrients in such a small volume gives it an almost supplement-like potency.

FDA research showing pistachios provide 30% DV for vitamin B6 per ounce—unusual among nuts.

Amplifying The Essence

If a pistachio is essentially a compact bundle of nutrients in a tiny kernel, what would happen if we ground and compressed multiple pistachios into the volume of a single nut? Could this multiply its nutritional essence?

The Existential Core

How can you unravel the core of something that is itself a core?

To reach the heart of the pistachio, it was decided to sand it down using a file and sandpaper, making its fundamental nature gradually visible through successive stages of abrasion.

Through progressive sanding techniques, the pistachio’s naturally compliant core develops an increasingly refined patina, achieving optical qualities reminiscent of precious stones or pearls.
